Understanding Natural Stone What types of natural stone do you work with? Our primary materials are marble, limestone, travertine, granite, quartzite, and sandstone. Marble, limestone, and travertine are formed from calcium carbonate; granite, quartzite, and sandstone from silica. Whatever the composition, we specialize in creating dimensional, textured elements from each. Explore them across our Tiles, Panels, and Bath collections. Is natural stone eco-friendly? why choose it over alternatives?Natural stone is naturally occurring, exceptionally durable, and fully recyclable, with minimal environmental impact when responsibly sourced. Synthetic stone, ceramic, and porcelain carry high embodied energy from manufacturing, whereas natural stone does not. It’s unique, long-lasting, and adds enduring value to a property. We extend this through our zero-waste approach: even our miniature stone samples are made from offcut remnants of the carving process, so material isn’t discarded. Our Zero Waste Initiative explains how we put this into practice. How is natural stone different from ceramic, porcelain & manufactured stone?Natural stone is quarried directly from the earth, so each piece is unique, entirely natural and generally more durable. Ceramic and porcelain are manufactured for uniformity in color and size. Manufactured stone is a concrete blend designed to mimic the look of natural stone, without its origin or character.
Choosing & Specifying How do I choose the right stone for my project?Consider the application (interior or exterior), the aesthetic you’re after, maintenance, and durability, since each material ages and responds to its environment differently. The best stone is the one suited to your specific project, and consulting our sales and design team is the surest way to realize your design intent. Browsing our Materiality page and Projects is a good place to start. How do I select a color?Weigh the overall aesthetic, lighting, traffic, durability, weather exposure, and intended use of the space. Neutral tones offer versatility; bold colors make strong focal points. All marble, limestone, quartzite, sandstone, and granite can be used indoors or out, though each weathers in its own way. You can preview material and color in context using the Borrowed Earth Design Build app.
